The BOSTON HERALD reports: The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute of Boston confirmed yesterday that the New York Yankees plan to donate to the Jimmy Fund the David Ortiz jersey they chipped from beneath two feet of cement in the new Yankee Stadium.
“They will be sending it to us later this week,” hospital spokesman Bill Schaller said. The Yanks thought it more appropriate to let the shirt be auctioned off to help the Jimmy Fund - a charity, ironically enough, synonymous with the Red Sox.
“The Steinbrenner family has supported the Jimmy Fund in the past, so we’re very grateful they thought of us,” Schaller said. “I think everyone’s on the same side when it comes to cancer. We all want to beat it.”
