This time the call is not from a manager in a dugout telling Goose Gossage to come in and save a game.
This call was from the Baseball Hall of Fame, informing Richard Michael Gossage that he is now known as "Hall of Famer Goose Gossage".
Just four pitchers who were primarily relievers are in the Hall: Hoyt Wilhelm, Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley and Bruce Sutter (2006).
Gossage is proud that he was the type of closer that doesn't exist today: Fifty-two of his 310 saves were of seven outs or more, while Mariano Rivera has just one, Trevor Hoffman two and Eckersley five.
"Now it takes three guys to do kind of what I used to do," Gossage said.Gossage's last game was on August 8, 1994. Seattle beat Texas 14-4. Gossage got a save for going 3 innings.
The last batter he faced was Jose Canseco, who flied out to left. His last strikeout was Estaban Beltre, pinch hitting for Manny Lee. Beltre went down swinging.
