THE POST-SEASON, POST-MORTEM EDITION OF NYYU.
What a total embarrassment! I'm sure G3 will have the folks in Tampa soon to read them the riot act.
Here is my take:
1. I felt that his series was over when I watched Mussina blow the 3-1 lead. Knowing that Little Eunice needed an epidoral for his back and Torre was committed to Wright in game 4 was not an indication of good things to come. For some reason Mussina has difficulty pitching with a lead.
2. Torre takes a hit for the way the post-season roster was assembled. This team got where they were with Melky Cabrera, Andy Phillips and Bernie Williams. You play who got you there. The team that Torre put out there was NOT the team that mashed the Red Sox and ran away with the A.L. East title. As far as I'm concerned Matsui and Sheffield should have been on the bench.
3. A-Rod 6th? 8th? Cano 9th? Once again...not the same order that won the east. Because Matsui and Sheffield were back in the line-up, the order changed and it was a disaster.
A-Dud: 1 for 14! Series AVG .071. This guy's gotta go!
Little Miss Eunice: 5 innings, 8 hits, 5 earned runs. (Note to Eunice: RETIRE!)
Cano: 2-15. Change in batting order effect him?
Cabrera: 0-3. 3! He was instrumental getting the Yanks into the post season and he gets 3 AB's in 4 games!
Sheffield: Series AVG .083, good idea getting him in there!
Williams: 0-3. The post season legend gets 3 AB's in 4 games. Didn't Bernie earn more than this for what he did this year?
Wright: 2 innings, 5 hits, 3 earned runs 2 homers. Please tell me we wont have to see him in 2007...PLEASE!
Lidle: 1 inning, 4 hits, 3 runs. Cashman INSISTED on this guy in the Abreu deal?
Changes to come, no doubt. More on that subject to come as I begin "NYYU: Hot Stove Edition"...Tomorrow!
