Lee Mazzilli fired yesterday as Yanks "bench coach".Don Mattingly will go from hitting coach to bench coach, continuing to be groomed as Torre's successor.
Kevin Long, the Triple-A hitting coach for the past three seasons, is the leading candidate to take Mattingly's old job.
Joe Girardi, the man Mazzilli replaced as Torre's bench coach when Girardi landed the Marlins' managing job, said yesterday he hasn't been approached by the Yankees regarding a coaching position. Girardi, working as part of the Fox television crew during the World Series, is expected to rejoin YES shortly.
