Michael Kay had dozens of questions for Johnny Damon yesterday at a studio in the Chelsea section of Manhattan at a taping of his interview show on the YES Network, "CenterStage." During a break, Damon had a question for Kay.
The fashionable Damon, the Yankees' new center fielder, asked Kay about the Yankees' dress code. Kay, a Yankees broadcaster, told Damon that although players must wear suits when they travel, they do not have to dress formally all the time.
Damon had another haircut about 10 days ago, but he still looked distinctive, with long sideburns, blond highlights and hair hanging over his forehead. The beard is gone, but Damon said he did not want to change much else. Will he still be an Idiot, the nickname he popularized for the 2004 Red Sox?
"Yes, I will be," Damon told Kay. "But a tamer idiot. I can be an idiot, but not stupid."
Damon said he already felt like a Yankee. Some fans booed him at a Rangers game Saturday, but Damon said he would win them over soon.
"I know I won't be accepted by them until I start playing well," Damon said. "If I play well, they're going to accept me."
