Hal Steinbrenner told New York Daily News writer Bill Madden that he plans on hiring Piniella as a consultant when he's done managing the Cubs."I spent the best years of my life here," Piniella said, "and there's no other organization in baseball like the Yankees."
This has been rumored in the past, but Steinbrenner's public courting of the former Yankees player shows he really means business.
However, Piniella is very popular in Chicago, and if he gets the Cubs to the World Series this season, future Cubs owner Tom Ricketts could get Piniella to sign an extension beyond 2010.
