It was discovered over the weekend that Alex Rodriguez has a cyst in his right hip. Doctors want to take a closer look.
Rodriguez is on his way to Vail, Colorado to see Dr. Marc Phillipon (bio), a hip specialist at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic.
"A" experienced right hip stiffness this spring. He was examined by Dr. Chris Ahmad, the Yankees team physician on Saturday in Tampa. An MRI revealed the cyst in the right hip.
"We felt it was in everyone's best interest-for the team and the player-to send Alex to Dr. Phillipon, who is regarded as the leading expert in his field," said Brian Cashman, New York Yankees Senior Vice President and General Manager. "Alex has proven his durability throughout his career, and we will take every precaution and step necessary to ensure his health as we near the start of the 2009 regular season and beyond."
Rodriguez played for the Dominican Republic team Tuesday in an exhibition game against the Florida Marlins. He went 1-for-3 and left after 4 1/2 innings.
The hip problem leaves Rodriguez's status for the World Baseball Classic in doubt.
