"NUMBER 8, DON MATTINGLY, NUMBER 8"

Not exactly how Bob Sheppard said it for so many years, but our former #23 will wear #8 in Dodger blue.

Don Mattingly said in an interview with Mike and the Mad Dog on WFAN that he wanted to "do something different'' with his uniform number with the Dodgers.

He picked No. 8, which was worn by Yogi Berra.

"He's my man,'' Mattingly said. "It's for good luck.''

Mattingly wore #46 in his first two seasons with New York before taking #23 in 1984.

The last player before Mattingly to wear 23 was catcher Barry Foote ('81-'82). Don Zimmer wore 23 as a coach in '83.
