YANKS LOOKING "RICH"

The Yankees have expressed interest in infielder Rich Aurilia, and agent Barry Axelrod said Aurilia could come home -- but not as a utilityman. Axelrod said Aurilia wants to still be a regular player, which he could be with the Yankees if they see him as filling their need for a right-handed-hitting first baseman.

"It's intriguing," Axelrod said yesterday. "He grew up a Yankees fan."

Axelrod said the free-agent process has gone faster than he anticipated with Aurilia and indicated he could sign relatively soon.

"We've had conversations," Axelrod said of the Yankees, "and I would characterize it as sort of open-ended at this point."

Francesa was talking today about the
hideous idea of Shea Hillenbrand. Mike , who of course likes Bernie, wishes they'd given Bernie a try a first base. I don't know with all his physical problems if that would've been so great. But, it's got to be Bernie over Shea Hillenbrand for God's sake.

I want no part of anything named "Shea".
