STEINBRENNER SUSPENDED!

That was the headline on this date in 1974 when Commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspended George Steinbrenner for two years as a result of his conviction for illegal campaign contributions to Richard Nixon. In 1986, Steinbrenner was pardoned by president Ronald Reagan.

Another headline on this date in 1993, the Yankees aquired pitcher Xavier Hernandez from the Astros in exchange for pitcher Domingo Jean and infielder Andy Stankiewicz.

This trade was touted as yet another example of the Yankees trading their youth for veterans. Jean never pitched for the Astros and finished his 40 inning carreer with a 1-1 record with a 4.46 ERA.

Stankiewicz spent two seasons (2004-05) as the manager of the Staten Island Yankees, the Class A affiliate of the New York Yankees, in addition to one season (2002) as the hitting instructor for the Gulf Coast Yankees of the Rookie League. He also served as a roaming defensive coordinator and infield instructor for the Yankees farm system. He is now assistant coach for Arizona State University baseball.

And finally, in a trade that paid dividends for many years to come, in 1972 the Yankees aquired 3B Graig Nettles and C Gerry Moses from the Indians for C John Ellis, IF Jerry Kenney, and outfielders Charlie Spikes and Rusty Torres.
