TAMPA MAYOR: YANKEES NOT "WELCOME".
TAMPA - Mayor Pam Iorio said she won't add the New York Yankees - or the words "World Series" - to city welcome signs.
The signs, which recognize the Buccaneers, the Lightning and the Storm's professional sports titles, "will stay as is," she said.
"If we ever produce additional signs, we'll take everyone's viewpoint into consideration."
That should put an end to a debate that played out in newspaper stories and talk radio this week over whether to recognize the Yankees on Tampa's "City of Champions" signs. The mayor received more than a dozen messages about the issue, all saying to leave the Yankees off the signs.
City council members Rose Ferlita and John Dingfelder have said the Yankees deserve recognition on the signs because the team has won World Series titles and has spring training here. Plus, owner George Steinbrenner contributes to the community.
Iorio has said the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are the home team, and the signs were designed to recognize the titles won by home teams. The signs say "Super Bowl," "Stanley Cup" and "Arena Bowl." Adding "World Series" would be confusing, Iorio said, because the Devil Rays haven't won one.
Ferlita and Dingfelder aren't expected to push the issue further.
